After the purge, Grand Regent Thragg maintained stability while concealing the extent of their decline caused by the Scourge Virus, a bioweapon created by Thaedus that struck approximately 500 years before the main events, directly causing the empire's decline by killing approximately 99.9% of the population and leaving fewer than fifty adults alive. The virus forced the survivors to initiate cross-species reproduction programs. Nolan Grayson was sent to Earth as part of a long-term infiltration and conquest plan, not specifically to test if humans could produce viable offspring; his relationship with Debbie and the birth of Mark were not the primary mission objective.
